Batchelder Award 2008

Viz Media; for Brave Story- This story tells of the adventures of 10 year old Wataru. He is a boy whose life has become a mess. His father left the family for another woman and the mother has been hospitalized after trying to committ suicide. Wataru wants to change his life and so he navigates into a magical world of Vision. This is a land filled with both friendly and fierce creatures. Through his journey he encounters struggles and one real world rival that he must outwit. This rival wants to reach the Tower of Destiny. Wataru must gather five gemstones and visit the goddess at the Tower of Destiny in order for her to grant him one wish. His wish is for his family to be back the way they used to be. In the end Wataru makes a selfless wish to save Vision from the Mazoku because of all the friends he has made. He gets his mom back and Mitsuru and Aya are brought back to life.

This is an intriguing fantasy tale about adventure, growing up, friendship and family bonds. The novel unites together the themes of growing up and dealing with adversity into an adventure that will excite a wide range of readers.
