The Poet Slave of Cuba: A Biography of Juan Francisco Manzano- This book tells the story of the poet Juan Francisco Manzano, who lived in slavery in Cuba. The biography is told in verses, which allows the readers to understand the horrors and cruelty inflicted upon Juan. He was whipped anytime he was caught showing his gift of poetry with words and use of language. The poetry in this book is strong and speaks directly to the reader. It is a well written book but not as pleasant to read. This book makes you wonder how someone could live under such unbearable conditions and still have the hope to live. Engle, the writer makes sure to get her point across in this book.
